Indonesian National Hydrogen Strategy

 Baby steps to giant strides

In my personal view, the Indonesian National Hydrogen Strategy Document marks a significant initial baby step toward establishing giant stride of a future low-carbon hydrogen infrastructure in Indonesia. Unveiled in 2023 by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) , this document serves as a comprehensive guide for all stakeholders involved in the development of hydrogen energy in the country.

To simplify, three key strategies for hydrogen development were delineated: first, reducing reliance on fossil fuels to ensure sovereignty and energy security; second, achieving decarbonization goals by cultivating the domestic hydrogen market; and third, exporting hydrogen and its derivative products to the global market.

These strategies evolved through in-depth discussions and analysis, where I played a role as a member of the preparation team, contributing modestly to these conversations. The analysis employed a Theory of Change approach for the strategic framework, followed by an Objective and Output Tree Diagram Analysis, and a Strength Weakness Opportunity & Threat (SWOT) Analysis. This was complemented by a Large Group Discussion with stakeholders.

From this journey in preparing the National Hydrogen Strategy Document in 2023, I acquired numerous new insights and valuable experiences. I take pride in working under the guidance of Pak Tony Susandy & Pak Haqi from the Aneka EBT Hydrogen Team and engaging in warm discussions with Mas Aloysius Damar Pranadi & UK Mentari Team, and expert from Ricardo plc .
