Sotoy Review : My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier

I read this book as a part of my assignment in a course. I did not have any expectation about the plot since it is only to exercise my reading. Then, when i finished read this book, my memory take me to Buya Hamka's novel.
I believe i did not read the extended or full version because it is just 100 pages, so my judgement might not fully complete. This book was published in 1950 and has already adopted into movies twice.
The plot is very simple. About a young boy, who does not believe with love, have to life with a woman which is his late cousin's wife. He suspected the women that make his cousin died. Then he felt in love with her. Problems and drama have come and gone. However, in the end, they did not life happily after.
My thought went directly to Zainudin and Hayati's ending. There is no happy ending for the lover. Somehow, I amazed at how the 19' & 20'-century authors could create such epic ending. They did not hesitated to "kill" the main character.
