New Zealand Parliaments' Public Debate
Last week, on Tuesday, 23 July 2024, as part of the ELTO program, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a public debate in the New Zealand parliament. One of the twelve questions in the oral question session featured Prime Minister Luxon and Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick.
The discussion was intense and insightful, focusing on critical issues such as the government's progress towards meeting climate targets for 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Chlöe Swarbrick challenged PM Luxon on the government's approach, particularly questioning the decision to reduce funding for the emissions trading scheme (ETS) and addressing the recent failure of the ETS auction. PM Luxon provided his counterarguments, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking exchange. Witnessing such a debate, where important topics are scrutinized, was truly inspiring. It would be fantastic to see similar debates on pressing issues in Indonesia.
We can re-watch the debate from the parliament website. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photos inside the chamber. :)
