My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As part of my learning journey in the NZELTO program, I recently read a version of this book tailored for English learners. This review specifically reflects my experience with that edition, as its format and language differ significantly from the original.

The story centers around a desperate former law student in Russia who develops a disturbing theory about morality and murder. He believes there are two types of killers, and that by murdering a greedy old woman who charges exorbitant interest on loans, he can free himself from poverty. With the money he gains, he imagines he could achieve great things and convinces himself that some crimes are justifiable if they serve the greater good of 'extraordinary' individuals. However, after committing the act, he is consumed by confusion, paranoia, and revulsion. His justifications unravel as he is overwhelmed by guilt.

This book is an engaging read for students during their free time. The grammar is thoughtfully structured, making it easier to grasp key concepts. The vocabulary is also rich enough to expand your own. Overall, I highly recommend this book to ELTO students.
